First Visit
Parents can influence how a child perceives a normal dental check-up. Saying too much can create a negative response during this experience. Most parents find it helpful to explain that we will simply "count" and brush his/her teeth and instruct you both in proper toothbrushing techniques and dental care.
Our office has been specially designed to create a warm and friendly atmosphere for all of our patients and their parents. We recognize that some children, especially younger (or new) patients, are more comfortable with a parent present during the first visit. The treatment areas, therefore, have been designed so that parents can accompany their preschool aged children. This usually will help children acclimate to a new or unfamiliar setting.
We will thoroughly explain each of our procedures in terms that your child can understand. Once your child is comfortable, a full examination of the teeth and supporting structures (gums, bones, etc.) can be performed. The occlusal status (or bite) will be evaluated and the teeth will be polished and flossed. Radiographs (x-rays) will only be taken if necessary for diagnostic purposes. We are very conservative about taking x-rays of children and have selected x-ray equipment that provides maximum safety for our patients. We will always discuss the recommendations for any x‑rays with you in advance. If your child has had any x‑rays prior to joining our practice, please have them sent along with any previous dental records.
Following the dental examination of your child, we will discuss treatment recommendations. Any questions you may have concerning the plan of treatment can be answered at this time. Please inform us of any special considerations that may help us to provide the best quality dental care for your child.
Philosophy of Treatment
Our emphasis is on prevention, specifically, early oral hygiene home care, control of decay-causing foods and drinks and use of topical fluoride treatments to strengthen the developing teeth. Your child will receive instruction in oral hygiene including tooth-brushing and flossing. We will advise you and your child about proper diet and control of snacks. It is important to realize that the primary (baby) teeth form the basis of the adult dentition, and we will do everything possible to preserve the integrity of your child's dental health.
We also recommend the application of sealants to help your child remain as cavity free as possible. A sealant is a non-toxic plastic material that is placed on the biting surface of the permanent molar teeth. Usually, these are first placed by the age of six.
Check-up visits are scheduled at 6-month intervals but can be altered depending on your child's requirements.
